Davangere, Dec 24: As many as 10 persons of a marriage party died and over 50 were injured when a goods vehicle by which they were travelling overturned between Karadikallu and Suggahalli villages, near Nyamathi in Honnali taluk, about 80 km from here, on Monday. Over 20 injured have been admitted to the Chigateri hospital here, while the others were taken to Shimoga. Of the 28 people admitted here, the condition of five is stated to be critical. All the deceased and the injured were from Banuvalli village in Harihar taluk.
Over 65 people from the village had been to Tirtha Rameshwara for the marriage and the accident occurred when they were returning to the village.
According to the police, the vehicle was being driven rashly.
Six of the dead were identified as Hanumanthappa (70), Murali (8), Maheshwarappa (55), Santosh Kumar (22), Veerabhadrappa (59) and Poojar Nagappa (55).
According to a few injured persons, the vehicle was being driven at high speed and they had repeatedly asked the driver to go slow as they were in no hurry to reach their destination.
But the driver, they said, did not heed the advice.
More than 20 women who were planning to return to the village with the group, remained at Tirtha Rameshwara as the parents of the bride compelled them to stay, the injured persons said.
