Kasargod, Dec 16: Around 100 people were injured when a temporary gallery set up for a sevens football tournament at Bekal in Kasaragod district collapsed on Sunday evening on the inaugural day of the tournament.

The western part of the temporary gallery, which was set up using  steel rods, suddenly collapsed with a huge noise by 8.30 pm ahead of the inauguration of the Sevens Football Tournament organised by Brothers Bekkal.

The flaws in erecting the gallery are suspected to be the cause of the collapse. Sangam Majeed was the contractor entrusted to set it up.

According to the sources, the injured were taken to nearby private hospitals and District Hospital, Kanhangad. Hospital sources said that no serious injuries had been reported. The timely intervention and rescue activities by the spectators and organisers avoided more undesirable incidents including stampede.

Most of the injured were taken to the hospital in private vehicles as the police personnel and ambulances were late to arrive the spot, said sources. Udma MLA K Kunjiraman and Kasargod MLA N A Nellikkunnu were present.
