Bangalore, Jan 3: A class VIII student, who was riding a two-wheeler to school even though he did not have a driving licence, was killed when a bus attached to another school ran him over at RPC Layout in Vijayanagar on Thursday morning.
Sumukh, the 14-year-old victim, tried to overtake a bus belonging to the New Cambridge School but lost control over his two-wheeler.
The motorcycle brushed against the school bus and Sumukh fell down. The rear wheel of the bus then ran him over, killing him on the spot. The driver got off the bus and fled the spot.
Vijayanagar traffic police, who are investigating the case, described as “outrageous” the decision by Sumukh's parents to allow him to ride a motorcycle although he was years short of the legal age to get a driving licence.
Sumukh was studying at Sardar Patel School. The school bus involved in the accident was ferrying teachers at that time. “We are shocked to find that the parents of the young boy let him ride the two-wheeler even though he did not have a licence and was years short of obtaining one. They are as much responsible as the driver for what happened,” police said. A manhunt has been launched for the absconding driver.
