Bengaluru, Nov 29: A 15-year-old high school student was hacked to death allegedly by her relative near her school after she refused to marry him.
The horrific incident took place in Doddaballapura on Wednesday morning while the girl — a student of standard 10 — was walking to school.
The accused, Naveen V., is a 28-year-old construction labourer. He consumed poison after allegedly attacking the girl with a machete, and is currently being treated in a hospital.
Passers-by, who were witness to the alleged attack, said the girl collapsed before they could intervene. They were able to nab Naveen and alert the police.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 8.45 a.m. “Naveen, armed with a machete, followed the girl and attacked her when she was just a few yards away from the school in Gangadharpur,” said a police officer.
Accused is a relative
Naveen is the brother-in-law of the victim’s eldest sister. “He had asked the girl’s parents for her hand in marriage,” the officer added.
He would allegedly stalk her and even keep watch on her parents. The situation became so bad that the family complained to the village elders who warned Naveen to stay away. “Her parents told him to wait for three years before bringing up the idea of marriage. The girl made it clear that she had no intention of marrying him.”
Naveen has been arrested for murder.
