Shimla, Apr 9: At least 27 people, including 24 schoolchildren, were killed as a private school bus veered off the road and went 200 feet down into a gorge at Malakwal in Nurpur in Kangra district of Himachal Pradeshon Monday evening.
Around 13 students from classes I to V died on the spot and rest others succumbed to their injuries in the Nurpur hospital. The driver of the bus and two school teachers have also been killed.
The number of causalities could go up as there were about 40 children in the bus, said the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nurpur, Husain Sidqque. The bus belonged to Vazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School in Nurpur in Kangra.
Some of the seriously injured have been rushed to Pathankot hospital. Most of the deceased belong to the nearby villages.
Senior Cabinet Minister Krishan Kapoor and local MLA Rakesh Pathania have rushed to the spot to monitor the rescue operation.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has expressed grief over the accident and has ordered a magisterial enquiry. He has also announced an ex-gratia grant of ₹5 lakh to the bereaved family members.
