Mangalore, Feb 19: The 387th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji was observed in a programme jointly organised by Kannada and Culture Department and Karnataka Kshatriya Maratha Parishad, Dakshina Kannada at Town Hall here on Wednesday.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that Shivaji was the first king who formed a kingdom representing the true consciousness of India and ruled with the policy of Swarajya (self-rule). He fought against the Mughals and successfully defied them. In these times of global crisis, India needs a vision that follows his footsteps, he said.
He said that children need to be made aware of the principles of Shivaji such as his thinking towards preservation of culture.
Responding to the appeal made by office-bearers of the Parishad for funds to construct a samudaya bhavan in Mangalore, he consented to grant a sum of Rs 2 lakhs for the project which would be released shortly.
In his keynote address, retired teacher and researcher P Sarvagna Achar spoke on the values and the spirit of warriorship upheld by Shivaji in his life. “At a very ripe age, Shivaji's mother Jeejabai influenced on him to fight for the oppressed and depressed classes of the society. He was focused on his goal of building an independent empire for himself. He is a role model for the entire country. We should comprehend the principles and values Shivaji had inculcated in his life, and imbibe these qualities in our children,” he said.
Presiding over the programme, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that Shivaji was an example to India, who had a great respect towards all religions, fought against injustice against the lower classes and sought to put an end to practices like sati system and untouchability.
District president of the Parishad A V Suresh Rao Karmore, president of Arya Yaane Maratha Samaja Sangha Devoji Rao Jadhav, deputy director of Kannada and culture department Chandrahas Rai, Gururaj N Dharmaraj and others participated in the programme.
