Mangaluru, Mar 4: Five medical students sustained severe injuries when the car in which they were travelling rammed into an electric pole at Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city on Friday night.
Among the injured the condition of Mathew Varghese (21), a native of Kerala, is said to be extremely critical.
The other four occupants of the car—identified as George Rohan, Kaushik Thomas, Shamshad and Rajiv— also suffered multiple injuries. But, they are out of danger, hospital sources said.
The tragedy took place when the five students were returning to their rooms at Kuttar village after finishing their dinner at a bar-cum-restaurant in Deralakatte.
It is learnt that the driver lost control over the vehicle and hit a roadside pole. The intensity of the crash was such that the car has been damaged beyond repair.
A case has been registered at jurisdictional Ullal police station and investigations are on.
