Mangalore, Jan 18: As many as 751 cases received from Dakshina Kannada district pertaining to human rights violation are pending for disposal, said Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) Member Meera Saxena.
Saxena chaired a review meet held here on Saturday. Since 2007, a total of 1,947 complaints have been received from the district, of which 1,196 complaints have been disposed off.
Additional DC K Dayanand said that out of 10 cases received in the DC's office, one case is pending for disposal. Additional SP Dr Shivakumar said that out of 41 cases received by the district police, 36 cases have been disposed off. The remaining five will be disposed off within a week.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Thulasi Maddineni said that four cases are pending in the Zilla Panchayat. She asked as to how 751 cases are pending for disposal in the district. Saxena also visited the district jail.
Earlier in the grievances meeting, a petition received by her said that FIR was filed against 16 youth in a case related to communal flare-up at Sullia taluk in 1997. Though all the youth were acquitted of charges in 1999, the youth continues to remain in the list of rowdy sheeter. The petition in this regard was submitted by Sullia Town Panchayat Member K M Musthafa.
He said that the youth are not getting passport clearance. Responding to the appeal, Saxena promised to speak to the SP.
There was a lukewarm response to the grievances meeting, as a few members of the public had taken part in it. Hasanabba Ammembala said that he had urged the authorities concerned to construct a public toilet in Pumpwell. However, no action has been initiated so far.
He also brought the issue of an iron rod placed beside the road near State Bank area. He said that the KSRTC buses should be introduced to rural areas in the district. A police outpost should be opened at Nethravathi bridge.
