Mangalore, Dec 10: “Human rights mean trying to infuse dignity in the human lives. We should try to infuse culture, morals and values in society, and have a strong legal system to counter human rights violations,” said senior advocate K P Vasudeva Rao.
Delivering the keynote address at Human Rights Day celebrations programme jointly organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration, District and Sessions Court, Legal Services Authority and non-governmental organisations at Town Hal in the city on Tuesday, he said that advocates had greatest responsibility in upholding human rights.
“Awareness on human rights must be brought in the society, and advocates and public-spirited people in the society should try to propagate it,” he said, adding that personnel in the police department too should uphold justice and counter human rights violations.
He said that for a better society where there are no violation of human rights, intellectuals should be brought in the fields of education and religion. This will lay foundation for upholding human rights, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Additional Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada Shivakumar said that in times of clashes between the police force and culprits, the police are criticised for violating human rights when they are trying to restore order in the situation. For the sake of checking crime and bringing order in the place, people must try to co-operate with the police force, he said.
In her presidential address, CEO of DK Zilla Panchayat Tulasi Maddideni said that every right that is enshrined in the constitution had to be fought for and defended.
DK Principal District and Sessions Judge B V Prakash inaugurated the programme.
Mangalore Bar Association president Ashok Ariga and senior civil advocate Vanamala Yadav also spoke on the occasion.
Additional Deputy Commissioner K Dayanand welcomed the gathering.
