Mangaluru, Sept 6: The students, faculty and administration of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) gathered at 12 noon in the Mother Theresa Peace Park on Wednesday to condemn the brutal murder of Gauri Lankesh, senior journalist and activist who was among the most courageous anti-establishment voices in the nation.
Rev Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Principal of St Aloysius College, Rev. Fr Dionysius Vas SJ, Rector, St Aloysius Institutions, Dr A M Narahari, Registrar, Rev. Dr Melwyn Pinto SJ, HOD Journalism, faculty and students were present for the solemn occasion. The gathering paid homage to the deceased soul by observing silence. Nivedha N of II BA, the student representative, urged the pupils to raise their voice and be bold, just like the late journalist. Dr A M Narahari, Registrar, extolled the values of free speech and implored the gathering to uphold the values that the great woman stood for.
“You can kill a person, but you cannot kill an idea”, he stated. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Principal, condemned the incident as a blight upon womanhood, the Constitution and fundamental rights. “St Aloysius College has, and always will stand for the values of freedom of expression”, he said. Rev. Fr Dionysius Vas SJ, Rector, expressed his sincere and heartfelt pain at the tragedy. He quoted Archbishop Oscar Romero to emphasize that an indomitable spirit cannot be burnt, and that ideas live on.
