Assault on couple at Ujire: Two more miscreants arrested

Mangalore, Jul 19: Belthangady police have arrested two more accused in connection with the assault on a Muslim couple at Ujire earlier this week. With this the total number of the arrested rose to six.

The arrested have been identified as Praveen and Kiran, both from Belthangady. Police sources said they may be produced in the court on Saturday.

Mohammed Shabbir from Banakal of Mudigere taluk, and fiancée from Karkala, were assaulted by a mob at the Ujire bus stand on Wednesday. The victims had identified five as main culprits. The police after studying the video clipping given to them by an eyewitness, arrested the accused.

Meanwhile, four persons who were arrested on Thursday have been remanded to 15 days judicial custody by the Belthangady court on Friday. They are Ajith, a salesman from Mani, Gopal, a daily wage earner, Lingappa, an autorickshaw driver, both from Ujire and Suresh, a hotel worker, from Moodabidri. They have been booked under sections pertaining to sexual assault, attempt to murder.
