Mangalore, Feb 11: The medical staff and post-graduate students of Yenepoya University at Deralakatte took to the street on Tuesday came out to the street in support of the PG medico who was assaulted by a group of bystanders in the university premises for allegedly molesting a patient while on duty.
Condemning the alleged assault on the medico at Yenepoya Hospital at Deralakatte, the protestors came out in the open to express their solidarity with the medico and demanded action against the assault on him.
Dr Niyaz, a second year post graduate student pursuing his MD in Pulmonary Medicine, was allegedly manhandled by a group of women on charges of molesting a patient while examining her on Monday.
On the other hand, the management of the hospital issued a statement in support of the medico, stating that it was a conspiracy to tarnish the reputation of the institution and to disturb the harmony in the region.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com on this issue, Dr Najeeb Ismail said that the medical PG students and staff of the university had protested in condemnation of the way Dr Niyaz was assaulted. “We have approached the police authorities in order to take a legal action against the persons who manhandled the PG medico. A complaint has been filed in this regard in Ullal police station and an FIR has been registered,” he said.
A member of the staff at Yenepoya University said that the incident looked like an apparent act of malicious intent. The medico was examining the patient when he objected to another person recording a video of the same. However, people who had accompanied the female patient then tried to manhandle him, which is not right,” he said.
A case has been registered under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of Indian Penal Code at Ullal police station.
Meanwhile, another case has been registered by the patient under sections 354, 376 and 511 of the IPC.
