Attack on Muslim couple: Four miscreants remanded to judicial custody

Beltangady, Jul 18: Four persons arrested in moral policing case in which a Muslim boy and his fiancée being assaulted by a gang of Sangh Parivar activists were remanded in judicial custody on Thursday.

Gopal (32), a resident of T B Cross in Laila in Beltangady, Ajith Kumar (23), a resident of Mani in Bantwal, Suresh Salian (22) from Koosabettu-Valpady in Moodbidri, and Lingappa Naik (37), a resident of Machar Ujire were produced before Beltangady Magistrate who remanded the accused in judicial custody.

They have been booked under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 307 (attempt to murder), 153/A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

On July 16, the victims Mohammed Saabir from Mudigere, Chikmagalur District and Rifa from Karkala, Udupi district were manhandled by more than 50 Sangh Parivar activists for being together'. They assaulted them at the Ujire bus stand mistaking them as couple belonging to different communities as the girl was not wearing a veil or burqa and her nose was pierced.

The couple were engaged and Saabir had come to admit his sister at a college in Nitte. Rifa is a student of a college in Moodbidri. Saabir was to take a bus to Mudigere from Ujire and Rifa had come along with him.

Police had launched search for the accused based on the video clipping given to them by a person who saw the incident.
