Awareness programmes help children open up about sexual abuse in Dakshina Kannada

A few days ago, a 10-year-old rape victim, whose abortion plea was turned down by the Supreme Court, delivered a baby through C-section at one of the government hospitals in north Indian city of Chandigarh. The news was shocking. But, it wasn’t the first such case in this great country. Child sex abuse is rampant in all parts of India.

Even a district like Dakshina Kannada, which is an education hub in country, has had 147 cases registered under Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act from 2014 to June 2017, out of which 13 were cases of pregnancy. Since the law allows termination of pregnancy only within 20 weeks, some of the minors had to deliver the babies and give them up for adoption.

Sexual abuse is traumatizing for anyone who goes through it, but for a child, the scars can run much deeper. Opening up about such horrific incidents is often very difficult for anybody, especially in an age where you are hardly aware of such things. Abuse by close family members and other familiar faces makes it all the more difficult. However, continuous awareness programmes such as workshops by concerned government departments and non-government originations, combined with the efforts of schools to educate children about “ill-intentioned” touches have helped many such incidents come to light.

In recent years, more and more teenagers and preteens are coming out about sexual abuse or violence faced by them. More and more cases on child abuse are even getting reported. Not just girls, even young boys facing sexual abuse have been talking about it lately.

“It is not that such incidents weren’t happening earlier. There is an increase in such incidents coming to light due to better awareness among children. It is important that we teach children what is safe and unsafe touch. Most of the victims are sexually abused by persons known to them. Victims have been counseled and sent to rehabilitation centers,” said K Nikesh Shetty, president of Child Welfare Committee, Daksina Kannada.

The highest number of cases registered on sexual abuse of minors in Dakshina Kannada district are from Sullia and Belthangady taluks that have large areas of woods. Children walking through such lonely roads are often easy to target as they are surrounded by thick vegetation. Nikesh said that the attacker commonly hides there, waits for the victim and drags them to the woods where they are assaulted.

The youngest child pregnancy was reported from Bantwal in 2014, where the survivor was a 9-year-old. She was assaulted by a neighbor and delivered a baby.

Another case of a 12-year old was found out when she broke down in front of the CWC officials during a workshop on Posco in Mangaluru. It was her uncle who had been abusing her for about a year. When medical examinations were conducted, the preteen was found to be four months pregnant. The uncle was arrested and jailed, while the baby delivered by her was given for adoption. She resumed her studies and is doing well now.

In yet another case, a teenager was forced into prostitution in Belthangady. 7 auto rickshaw drivers were booked under the Posco act for sexually assaulting her. The ASHA workers who visited her found an unusual growth of her body and medical examination revealed pregnancy. She is now in a rehabilitation center, her education and other facilities are being taken care of to ensure a decent life and earning conditions for her, said Nikesh. The good news is that law is getting tougher with such criminals and courts do not grant bails to such accused easily, he added.

Bengaluru: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led union government has requested the Karnataka High Court to direct the Mandya district administration and the state government to clear a madrasa operating within the premises of the historic Jama Masjid in Srirangapatna.

The Waqf Board, opposing this move, has claimed the mosque as its property and defended the right to conduct madrasa activities there.

The matter was brought before a division bench headed by Chief Justice N V Anjaria following a public interest litigation filed by a person named Abhishek Gowda from Kabbalu village in Kanakapura taluk. The petition alleged “unauthorised madrasa activities” within the mosque.

Representing the Central government, Additional Solicitor General of India for High Court of Karnataka, K Arvind Kamath argued that the Jama Masjid was designated as a protected monument in 1951, yet unauthorised madrasa operations continue there.

He noted that concerns over potential law and order issues have so far prevented any intervention. Kamath urged the court to direct the Mandya district administration to take action and vacate the madrasa from the mosque.

In defence, lawyers for the state government and the Waqf Board contested this request, stating that the Waqf Board had been recognised as the owner of the property since 1963 and, thus, conducting madrasa activities there is lawful.

After hearing both sides, the bench adjourned the case for further arguments, scheduling the next hearing for November 20.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.

Bengaluru: An estimated overall 10.14 per cent voter turnout was recorded during the first two hours, since the voting began for bypolls to three Assembly segments in Karnataka on Wednesday, election officials said.

The voting began at 7 am and will go on till 6 pm.

More than seven lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in about 770 polling stations in Shiggaon, Sandur and Channapatna, where a total of 45 candidates are in the fray.

While Channapatna recorded 10.34 per cent voter turnout till 9 am, it was 10.08 per cent in Shiggaon, and 9.99 per cent in Sandur, election officials said.

Voters, including women and elderly were seen queuing up in front of polling booths in these segments.

By-polls for Sandur, Shiggaon, and Channapatna are necessitated, as the seats fell vacant following the election of their respective representatives -- E Tukaram of Congress, former CM Basavaraj Bommai of BJP, and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy of JD(S) -- to Lok Sabha in May elections.

As many as 31 candidates are in the fray from Channapatna, while Sandur and Shiggaon have six and eight contenders, respectively.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the three segments for the smooth conduct of the polls.

The by-polls will witness a straight fight between the ruling Congress and BJP in Sandur and Shiggaon segments, while in Channapatna, JD(S) which is part of the NDA alliance is in contest against the grand old party.

Among the three segments, Channapatna is considered to be a "high profile", where the contest is between C P Yogeeshwara, a five time MLA from the segment and former Minister, who joined the Congress quitting BJP ahead of nomination, and actor-turned -politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy, who is Kumaraswamy’s son and former PM H D Deve Gowda's grandson.

BJP's Bharath Bommai, son of Basavaraj Bommai, is fighting Congress Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, who had faced defeat against the former Chief Minister in the 2023 Assembly polls, in Shiggaon.

Bharath Bommai and his father cast their vote at a polling booth in Shiggaon segment.

In Sandur, Bellary MP Tukaram's wife E Annapurna of Congress is contesting from the seat vacated by her husband, against, BJP ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu, who is considered close to party leader and former mining barron G Janardhan Reddy.

Annapurna, Tukaram and other family members cast their votes at a booth in the segment.

With Nikhil Kumaraswamy and Bharath Bommai contesting, the third generation of Gowda and Bommai families are in the fray in this by-poll. Both their fathers and grandfathers have served as Karnataka's Chief Ministers in the past.
