Bank robbery attempt in Brazil: at least 12 dead

Rio De Janeiro, Dec 8: At least 12 people, including two children, were killed when a shootout broke out between police and bank robbers attempting to blow up ATMs, local authorities in north-eastern Brazil said on Saturday.

Six hostages, among them two children, died in the shooting, local media reported, when police opened fire on the robbers at bank branches on the main street in Milagres in the interior of Ceará state.

Lielson Landim, the mayor of Milagres, said that before arriving in the city's center to commit the bank robbery, the assailants stole a truck to block one of the city's main streets.

Upon being discovered by police, a fierce gun fight broke out and lasted 20 minutes. At least three minors, who were being held as hostages along with their parents, died.

Several of the bank robbers managed to escape and police began an operative in the region to capture them.
