Banned books of Mate Mahadevi still available: Veerashaiva outfit

Bengaluru, Sept 22: The Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha on Thursday trained its guns on Lingayat seer Mate Mahadevi, in the backdrop of the Supreme Court upholding the state government’s ban on her book on 12th-century reformer Basavanna.

Her book 'Basavana Vachana Deepti' was banned because she changed Basavanna’s pen name from ‘Kudalasangama Deva’ to ‘Linga Deva’. Many more books containing the same “distortion” continue to be sold in the market, Veerashaiva Mahasabha vice-president BS Sachidananda Murthy said, demanding the state government to seize them all.

“There are at least ten other volumes of Basavanna’s vachanas brought out by Mate Mahadevi in which she has used the Linga Deva pen name and they are still available in the market despite a ban,” Murthy said. “We are collecting all these books and we will file cases. We want the government also to act,” he said while flashing one of Mahadevi’s books brought out in 2011. “She is diluting Basavanna’s vachanas which will do only harm to the society.”

In 1997, the State government had ordered a ban and seizure of Basava Vachana Deepti, which it believed could hurt religious sentiments. The ban was upheld by a three-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court in June 2003. The apex court, on Wednesday, dismissed Mahadevi’s petition challenging the ban. The Veerashaiva Mahasabha also became a party in the Supreme Court case, supporting the ban.

Will abide by order: Mate

Mate Mahadevi, the ban on whose book Basava Vachana Deepthi has been upheld by the Supreme Court, said on Thursday that she would abide by the order of the apex court.

On being asked whether the court order was a setback to her, the head of the Basava Dharmapeetha said it was no setback to her. She said all copies of the book had sold before the government banned it and that it would not be reprinted.

‘No change in Mahasabha name’

Days after the warring Veerashaiva and Lingayat camps called truce on the demand for a separate religion, Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha vice-president BS Sachidananda Murthy ruled out including the word ‘Lingayat’ in the organisation’s name. The Lingayat camp for long demanded that the organisation be called Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha, based on a decision that was taken many years ago. “It’s a lie. The name will change only if there’s consensus among all our members,” Murthy said.

Bengaluru, Nov 1: Hardline BJP leader and Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "Nationalise Waqf Assets", alleging Waqf board of "blatant violation" in claiming of the lands of Farmers, temples and mutts.

Taking to his social media, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal posted on X, saying "I have written a letter to the hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji to Nationalize the Waqf Assets in view of the arbitrary, blatant violation in claiming of the lands of Farmers, Landowners, Temples, Trusts and Mutts across the country by the Waqf board. All the citizens of the country have equal rights on the land. If the motive of Waqf is welfare and social service, this has to be done without bias and religious discrimination as India is a secular nation."

Additionally, Vijayapura MLA also attached the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his post.

Earlier, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya had accused the Waqf Board of encroaching on thousands of acres of farmers' lands with the support of the Karnataka government.

Surya stated, "There have been multiple press conferences and videos in the public domain where the Minister himself has admitted that these Waqf adalats are being conducted under the Chief Minister's instructions. This is a grave matter, where thousands of acres of farmers' lands are being encroached upon by the Waqf Board with the active support and collusion of the State Government."

He mentioned that, in recent days, farmers from various districts across Karnataka have reported that, without prior notice, ownership of their lands has been abruptly transferred to the Waqf Board.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticised BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, claiming he has done nothing for Bengaluru. Kharge's remarks came in response to the BJP MP's accusations regarding Waqf Board land encroachment.

The Congress leader assured that the Karnataka government is committed to protecting farmers' properties.

Kharge further questioned the BJP's record on protecting temples during its previous government, stating that the Karnataka government is committed to safeguarding temples and common people's properties.

The accused wife and the victim husband

Udupi, Oct 25: A seemingly natural death has unraveled into a heart-wrenching case of betrayal and murder in Udupi’s Marne village.

Balakrishna (44), who had been battling fever and severe illness for nearly a month, succumbed to his condition on October 20, despite extensive treatment at multiple hospitals.

Diagnosed with jaundice, he was under care at KMC Hospital in Manipal, Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru, NIMHANS Hospital in Bengaluru, and Victoria Hospital. But his symptoms persisted, and he was brought home on October 19, only to pass away at 3:30 am the next morning.

A complaint filed by his grieving brother, Ramakrishna (42), has now transformed Balakrishna's case into an alleged murder investigation. According to Ramakrishna, his brother’s wife, Pratima, had been in a relationship with Dileep from Hirgan. Allegedly, frustrated by Balakrishna's interference in her relationship, Pratima conspired with Dileep to eliminate him.

The complaint suggests that Pratima and Dileep plotted to gradually poison Balakrishna, lacing his meals with a toxic substance that steadily worsened his health.

In the early hours of October 20, Dileep allegedly visited the home, where he and Pratima are accused of suffocating Balakrishna with a bedsheet, ending his life in a final act of betrayal.

The Ajekar police have now registered a murder case, transforming Balakrishna's tragic death into a haunting investigation. They also have managed to arrest the victim’s wife and her boyfriend.
