Udupi, Nov 17: The Bharatiya Janata Party need not to completely depend on the issue of constructing Ram Mandir in Ayodhya for the looming Lok Sabha polls, according to Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje.
Addressing media persons here yesterday, the former Minister said: “The BJP is not depending on the issue of construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya alone for the forthcoming parliamentary polls. We will also focus on the several pro-people initiatives taken by the Narendra Modi government.”
The Opposition parties have no leader in their ranks who can match the stature of Prime Minister Modi, she added.
She also said that there were several issues which the Supreme Court had heard on priority as public interest was involved. So, a large number of people wanted the Ram Temple to be constructed in Ayodhya. Hence, the Supreme Court should take up the Ayodhya case and, the Union government, if necessary, would take an appropriate step on this issue.
Replying to a query, Ms. Karandlaje said that the question of appointing a new president for the State unit of BJP had not come up for discussion either at the State or national level of BJP.
Ms. Karandlaje said that the BJP high command would decide whether she would contest from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru parliamentary constituency or another constituency. She would obey the orders of the high command, she said.
Sand row
Karandlaje said that the government should start the process of sand removal from the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and non-CRZ areas of the district and start selling it.
She said that there is no point in the State government and the District Administration quoting rules endlessly on why they could not allow removal of sand. This was only letting the impasse continue and the people and government schemes were suffering as a result.
“A team under the Assistant Commissioner should identify the sand dunes. Then, the government can start removing excess sand and selling it. Those wanting to construct their houses would benefit. It would also help in starting the construction of low-cost houses under various government schemes,” she said.
