New Delhi, Aug 7: Former Delhi Chief Minister and Congress leader Sheila Dikshit on Sunday hit out at BJP on the issue of ‘cow protection’. Dikshit, while speaking to news agency ANI in Lukcnow, said that members of BJP worship cows but don’t protect them.
Dikshit’s comments come at a time when the debate of ‘cow protection’ and ‘cow vigilantism’ is rife in the country following a surge of violence carried out by self-acclaimed ‘gau-rakshaks’ in different parts of the country.
The Congress party has declared Sheila Dikshit as its chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh which is going to polls next year. Sheila also supported the idea of ‘Gau Raksha’ and said: “It is our prime responsibility. Cow sheds should be put in place where they can be kept safe.”
Congress party, whose UP campaign is being led by strategist Prashant Kishor, is expecting to garner support of Brahmin voters and hopes introducing Dikshit will play a prominent role in the campaign programme.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday sent out a strong message for cow vigilantism groups while speaking at the townhall event at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. PM Modi said that most of the people involved in these activities are anti-social elements who were running their shops in the name of cow protection.
