Mangalore, Dec 26: “Maintaining peace in the nation is of utmost importance for its development. Aman ke bina koi tarakki nahi hogi (There can be no development without peace). The need of the hour is to ensure that both Muslim and Hindu communities are united in the country,” said chairman of Gujarat Hajj Committee Sufi M K Chishty.
Speaking on 'Modi and Muslims' at an event organised by NaMo Brigade Mangalore, here on Thursday, he said that in the interest of the nation, there should be leaders who seek to bring goodwill between communities and peace in the society. For the protection of Muslims in the country, a Hindu society should be formed that seeks to build harmony with other communities, he said.
Referring to the Gujarat mass-riots that took place in 2002, he said that although they had occurred during Modi's tenure as chief minister, most riots in the state after Independence took place during the rule of Indian National Congress where people from both Hindu and Muslim communities were killed. “Justice should be given to victims of both the communities. Nobody remembers the names of chief ministers during the riots that took place in 1965, 1985 or 1987, but Modi's name is linked with those that occurred with 2002,” he said, adding that there have been no curfews in Gujarat from the past 11 years.
He said that the majority of prisoners in jails in Congress-ruling states are Muslims. Targeting the Congress for their inefficient administration is those states, he said that if the party had worked for the welfare, education and development of Muslims, they would not have been languishing in jails.
Speaking about global terrorism and its misconstrued link to Islam, he said that terrorism had been made a brand endorsed by the projection of Osama bin Laden as a terror mastermind by the US government. “It is the responsibility of spiritual and religious leaders and the media to spread public awareness on the real teachings of Islam to dispel this notion. We have to fight the roots of terrorism,” he said.
Columnist Chakravarthy Sulibele and multi-lingual poet Mohammed Baddoor were present on the occasion.
Sufi M K Chishty is also the 'Gadinasheen' of Dargah Sharif at Atodara and the present head of BJP Minority wing in Gujarat.
