Mangalore, Dec 25: Churches in Mangalore conducted midnight mass to mark the eve of Christmas on Tuesday.
Rosario Cathedral, Valencia, Milagrese church and St Sebastian Church in Bendoorwell conducted midnight mass with carol singing at 11.30pm to packed gathering.
Most Rev Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese led the mass at the Rosario Cathedral. The Bishop exhorted the gathered to walk on the path shown by Jesus Christ. "The life of Jesus was all about love, passion, compassion for the fellow human being and one of sacrifice for the betterment of mankind," he said.
In the neighbouring newly created Diocese of Udupi, the faithful had the rare luxury of attending the midnight mass. Mother of Sorrows Church and Milagres Cathedral, Kallinapur conducted midnight mass to packed gathering.
Incidentally, the trend of midnight mass has come down in Mangalore Diocese following the unsavoury incidents of attacks on churches and place of worship and churches in Dakshina Kannada conduct their masses in the late evening.
Christian homes across the city were tastefully decorated with bright coloured stars. Cribs were the focal point of attraction at Churches in the city. The parishioners enjoyed the carol singing by the parish choirs prior to the mass and this was followed by games for the young and old alike. City police kept a tight vigil at Churches keeping in mind earlier year incidents of miscreants trying to create fear by acts of stone pelting.
