Mangalore: The much awaited Athrady-Mangalore airport road four laning work does not seem to be becoming a reality soon. Though the Infrastructure Development department has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) last November, there has been no progress after that.

The project aims to develop the Athrady-Bajpre road (SH-67) into four lane and extend it till the airport, all measuring up to 55.9 kms. The project is estimated to cost Rs 580 crore.

The Coastal Development Authority had prepared a comprehensive report and had submitted it to the Department for Infrastructure Development. A copy of the same was submitted before the Chief Minister as well.

According to the project, there is a requirement for 298 acres of additional land, acquisition of which will need Rs 275 crore.

The project will be taken up in two phases-Maravoor-Sankalakariya and Sankalakariya-Athrady. The II phase of the project is estimated to cost Rs 250 cr and there are proposals of implementing the entire project in Public Private Participation model.

If the project is implemented then the distance between Mangalore airport and Udupi district will be reduced drastically. It is also going to ease out traffic congestion and will also boost development in villages between Bajpe and Manipal.

Outline

The project will cover 55 kms and will have eight flyovers, 11 bridges, 11 under passes, 11 by-passes, 169 cross drainage. Maravoor, Kenjar, Bajpe, Permude, Thenka Yekkar, Bada Yekkar, Kodamule, Mennabettu, Talipadi, Aikala, Yelinje, Sankalakariya, Mundkur, Belman, Manchakal, Kattinakere, Moodubelle, Bellepete, Patla, Marne, Hirebettu, Nellikatta and Athrady are the places which will be touched by the project.

However, Udupi District in-charge Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said that the process of implementing the project is on and in this regard a comprehensive report has been submitted to Minister for Road Transportation Oscar Fernandes. Efforts are being made to get funds from Central Government for the project.
