Bengaluru, Nov 2: In a bizarre case of dowry death, a college student killed herself by consuming poison, after the youth she was in love with allegedly dared her to die.
The deceased has been identified as Divya K (20), a resident of Kithaganur in east Bengaluru, and a first-year BCom student at a private college. Police are on the lookout for her friend Harish, a resident of the same area.
Police said Divya and Harish were in love and had reportedly eloped four months ago. After her parents lodged a police complaint, the duo returned to their respective homes.
Divya’s mother Anuradha alleged her daughter wanted to marry Harish, and they had agreed to her demand. However, trouble started when Harish allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh to marry her, and threatened to marry someone else if the amount was not paid.
Divya sent him messages, requesting him to marry her. However, Harish replied that he would tie the knot with another girl, and told her he would not be affected even if she died.
He sent another message, asking her if she had the guts to die. Following this, a depressed Divya consumed poison and died on Tuesday.
