Mangaluru, Oct 24: More than a year after a BSNL employee was hacked to death in front of his two children in Beltangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, a local court has awarded life term imprisonment to the convict.
The victim, Thimmappa Poojary, who hailed from Mudigere, was Chandrasekar’s neighbour. Both of them lived in rented houses on premises owned by Sudhir Holla at Santekatte village in Belthangady taluk.
According to sources, Chandrasekar is a dog lover and he used to feeding stray animals in the compound that was shared by his family and the victim. Thimmappa was asking him to feed the animals outside as they used to litter inside the compound. The two had clashed over the issue.
On that fateful day, Poojary had gone to a shop 60 feet from his house, after his two children pestered him to buy them ice-cream. The accused was waiting with a sword in his hand, and attacked him. Poojary died on the spot, in front of his two children. Forensic reports found 21 injuries on his body.
Chandrasekar also threatened Poojary’s wife Chambavathi and the children after the attack. Based on a complaint by Chambavathi, Belthangady police filed a case.
As many as 28 witnesses were produced before the court. Scientific evidence from the local Forensic Science Laboratory as well as state FSL at Madiwala found that Poojary’s blood was found on Chandrasekar’s clothes, the weapon matched, and circumstantial evidence proved that the accused was guilty. Besides, the victim’s two minor children gave evidence in front of the Belthangady magistrate under CrPC 164.
The principal district and sessions court Judge Kadlooru Satyanarayacharya on Tuesday found Chandrasekar guilty under IPC sections 302 for murder, and 506 for criminal intimidation. The judge sentenced the convict to life term under section IPC 302 for murder, and also fined him Rs 10,000, besides six months imprisonment for failing to pay the fine. Under Section 506, he was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5,000 as fine, and an additional six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine. The judge also directed the District Legal Services Authority to consider giving compensation for the family.
