As we go about our busy schedule in planning for Christmas, we often forget that there is more along the way than just shopping for clothes, family togetherness, carol singing, feasting on special foods and decorating house with Christmassy tree and crib. Though all these traditions are centered on the worship of Christ, what is the true meaning of Christmas?
Some believe Christmas is the festival of giving and sharing with the poor, and some believe that it is a festival of getting together with family. But, Christmas is simply the birthday of Jesus Christ. Christians all over the world rejoice because God became man and dwelt among us. Jesus was born in Bethlehem and was laid in a manger which indicates that he was born poor and in the simplest form unlike us. Yet, he came to this world to redeem us all. Jesus, God’s only son was sent to this world to fulfill his wish, which was to save us from sin by dying on the cross. His redemption freed us all from sins and gave salvation. This is a common belief that all Christians share.
Unfortunately, even till today we still live in a sad world full of sin and evil. There is crime everywhere like murder, rape, adultery, robbery, and so on. The list never ends and only way to stop it all lies within us. People only look at the outer aspects of a crime which consists of law and the person involved. But, instead people should look at the root cause to these problems which involves the human mind and body. If we wish to change ourselves, and if there is a transformation in the mind and body of that person; then we don’t even need laws and punishments. Every religion has a holy book and these books have all the necessary guidelines or teachings which will help a person develop spiritually and become a better individual. Nevertheless, it sounds like we are blind mentally and do not want to resolve problems which are right in front of us instead; we blame law which will do no help.
When the body and mind has come to self-realization, then there will be peace. This self-realization can be got through the help of scriptures and analysis of one’s actions and thoughts. Only when there is peace, everything will come to rest and people can live happily together like brothers and sisters. Jesus says, “Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid” (John 14:27).
Therefore, what is Christmas for each one of us? Every time a hand reaches out to help a needy person; every time when someone puts anger aside and strives for understanding; and when people forget their differences and realize their love for each other, then that’s Christmas. The real significance of Christmas lies within each one of us. Different people will have different opinion about what is Christmas for them. You may be a businessman, a working person, military person or any other profession; but, if you’re coming with the spirit to meet your loved ones and if it brings you closer, then that is the spirit of understanding and peace. This Christmas, what will you do to make someone happy or bring peace?
Wish all readers Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
