Manipal, Mar 16: Bollywood heartthrob Farhan Akhtar had the students of Manipal University grooving to his scintillating music at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) Quadrangular here on Saturday night as the curtains came down on a memorable note on the 36th edition of Revels, the cultural fest of MIT.

Revels was a success in all aspects: from its association with Hip-hop International to outstation participation, from the sale of almost 1,300 delegate cards on the first day itself to the biggest ProShow night ever, the success was unprecedented.

The ProShow with Farhan Live also had an undercurrent of women’s liberation, with a couple of songs by Farhan dedicated to it, and he repeatedly urged the crowd to pledge for MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination).

Events based on innovative ideas saw a larger footfall this year. ‘Moods,’ putting forth palettes of human emotions on words, was a popular event. ‘Psychus,’ an off-beat category, piqued the curiosity of numerous students, alongside events such as ‘Conquest,’ a labyrinth of manipulations, interpersonal skills, and stress handling.

The fashion show under ‘Haute Couture’ was a show stealer, with the turnout rivalling the ProShow. ‘Zamir,’ the event showcasing talent in Eastern Vocals had its participants proving their mettle. Virtuoso, the instrumental affair, saw a few participants handling uncommon instruments such as sarod, ukulele and darbuka, with panache.

A huge audience cheered their mates in the Western Group Dance category. Day four also saw crowd-pullers like ‘Mr. and Miss Revels,’ judging its participants on their latent talents and their presence of mind. ‘Battle of Bands,’ where 17 performances were led by three teams from MIT, including ‘The Lungi Band.’

The photography events were also based on out-of the-box ideas, such as a creative take on mundane arrangements of various consumer products, to showing them in a strikingly attractive light. The sports events saw participation of nearly 1,100 outstation members.

However, MIT teams proved their mettle by bagging the first place in football, hockey, squash (women) and tennis (both men and women), to name a few, bringing home the ‘Revels Sports Trophy’. VIT Vellore were the runners-up. Other teams who showed an impressive performance at Revels’15 were NIT-Trichy, KVGC-Sullia, SSN-Kalavakkam.

This edition of Revels was constructed on the foundation of SAHIL (Students Against Her Ignominy and Libel), carrying on the flame lit by MIT Sports Club with a cross-country run, put out the message of students against the restrictions, misogynistic beliefs, and superficial treatment of women.

Mangaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the urgent need for local job creation and a dedicated tourism policy to address communal tensions and rejuvenate the Dakshina Kannada region.

He spoke during "Ashoka Jan-Mana," a clothing distribution event organized by Rai Estates Educational and Charitable Trust, under the leadership of MLA Ashok Rai, at Kombettu’s taluk stadium in Puttur on Saturday.

“There are challenges to communal harmony across the coastal and interior regions of Dakshina Kannada. To counter these issues, we must provide opportunities for our youth," Shivakumar stated. "The government is considering a specialized tourism policy for the coastal areas to attract more visitors and retain local talent."

Shivakumar expressed concern about a rising trend among local youth to migrate to Saudi Arabia, Mumbai, and Bengaluru due to limited job opportunities in the area. "Communal disturbances have also discouraged students from other districts from enrolling in our institutions, and several banks that originated here have closed down," he said.

Highlighting the region's potential, Shivakumar remarked, “Dakshina Kannada is home to many temples and boasts a rich coastline. Yet, despite Mangaluru having a major port, we still lack five-star hotels. Developing tourism here will be essential for creating jobs and fostering harmony.”

He also hinted at development projects proposed by Ashok Rai for Puttur, which are currently under wraps due to by-election restrictions. Assuring commitment, Shivakumar said, “Although we secured only two seats in Dakshina Kannada, we are committed to developing all constituencies in the region.”

The Deputy Chief Minister concluded with a powerful message on leadership, likening Ashok Rai to a modern embodiment of ancient virtues. “For success, one should have Dharmaraya's righteousness, Karna's generosity, Arjuna's focus, Vidura's ethics, Bhima's strength, and Krishna's strategy. Ashok Rai has all these qualities," he said, praising Rai’s dedication to the people of Dakshina Kannada.

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.
