Udupi, Feb 10: Expressing hope that BJP will retain in Udupi zilla panchayat in looming elections, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje said that the saffron party brought in a new dimension to the administration five years ago.

shoba
Speaking to media persons after releasing the party’s manifesto at the BJP office here, she said the zilla panchayat was the hub of corruption during Congress rule.

Congress has already massacred Lokayukta institution and now is all set to annihilate Panchayat Raj System. The government is totally against the strengthening Panchayat Raj system, she criticised.

Karandlaje said the State government decided to conduct elections for zilla and taluk panchayats owing to the strict measures adopted by the Union government. The Union government has already instructed that the states, which fail to hold polls for the rural local bodies in time, will be deprived of nearly Rs 15,000 crore released to gram, taluk panchayat and zilla panchayats. This compelled the State government to announce the elections, she charged.

Alleging that the State government is ‘the worst-ever irresponsible government’, the MP ridiculed that people are curious to know on what grounds the Congress will fight the election as it has never taken any measures during its term to release funds for the betterment of rural areas.

She alleged that Congress is also interfering in the 14th Finance Commission funds released directly to the gram panchayats. The State government has deducted 25 per cent of the sum released citing the reason of pending electricity bills. However, the gram panchayats, which have paid the bills, have also suffered owing to the illogical and illegal attitude of the State government. The deduction is done to those gram panchayats that have paid the electricity bills, she said.

She said the Union government has earmarked about Rs 2 lakh crore under Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) programmes.

She said the planned conspiracy by the government raises doubts against involvement of the politician or a high-ranking official. She alleged that government has not taken legal action against the high-level officers. A few lower cadre officers were detained and later released, she charged.

She said the government mechanism is totally misused. The funds released in the last budget under RDPR Department have remained non-utilised. She said she realised that the action plan has not been approved till January when she discussed the issue of funds earmarked for the drinking water and other rural development works with DCs.

Karandlaje alleged that the State government was lackadaisical in its attitude in approving the action plans.

She said that crematorium and solid waste management units in all gram panchayats will be the top priority of the party. An ombudsman should be appointed to look into the financial transaction that take place in the local governance, she added.

Bengaluru, Oct 22: Torrential rains wreaked havoc in Karnataka’s capital on Monday night, leading to significant flight disruptions at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). According to airport authorities, over 20 flights were delayed due to the downpour, as reported by ANI.

Among the diversions were an Air India flight from Delhi and three IndiGo flights from Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh, all rerouted to Chennai. A Thai Lion Air flight from Thailand also had to be diverted to Chennai amid the heavy rainfall.

After western Bengaluru bore the brunt of Sunday’s rains, it was the northern, southeastern, and eastern parts of the city that were pounded by intense thundershowers on Monday. Rainfall across the city varied from light to very heavy, leaving many areas waterlogged.

By 11 PM, Sahakaranagar and Yelahanka in northern Bengaluru had received 154.4 mm and 110 mm of rainfall, respectively, according to data from Weather Union, a platform for crowd-sourced weather information. Other areas that saw heavy downpours included Devanahalli and Koramangala (88.2 mm each), HSR Layout (81.6 mm), and BEL Road (70.4 mm).

While RR Nagar, the most affected neighborhood on Sunday, saw a significant drop with only 19.4 mm of rainfall on Monday evening, other areas faced relentless showers. HAL airport recorded 42.3 mm of rain until 8:30 PM, with a monthly total of 228.5 mm, far exceeding the normal average of 177.3 mm.

Kempegowda International Airport recorded 105 mm of rainfall, while GKVK saw 21.2 mm as rains intensified late into the night, leaving northern and eastern Bengaluru grappling with the aftermath.

Bengaluru: Following allegations by a section of farmers from Vijayapura district that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, Karnataka Chief Minister Sidddaramaiah on Tuesday said none of them will be evicted, and notices issued to them will be withdrawn.

"No farmer will be evicted from their land. Yesterday Revenue Minister (Krishna Byre Gowda), M B Patil (Industries and Vijayapura district in-charge Minister) and Waqf Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan have jointly said that no farmer from Vijayapura will be evicted from their land," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said in case notices have been issued to farmers, they will be withdrawn.

Responding to a question that similar notices have been issued to farmers in Yadgir and Dharwad districts too, the CM said: "I will ask the Revenue Minister to look into it, nowhere farmers will be evicted."

Seeking to clarify "confusion" over 1,200 acres in Honavada of Tikota taluk being marked as Waqf property, M B Patil had recently said it was due to an “error” in the gazette notification.

He also had said only 11 acres out of the 1,200 acres are Waqf properties, and a task force headed by the Deputy Commissioner will be formed to resolve the issues.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday alleged that BJP was raking up the "Waqf issue" with an eye on the upcoming assembly by-polls in the state and elections in neighboring Maharashtra.

Following allegations by a section of farmers in certain parts of the state that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, he reiterated that none of them will be evicted, and notices issued to them will be withdrawn.

"BJP is doing politics. Notices were issued during their (BJP) tenure too, what do they have to say about it? During BJP's tenure over 200 notices were given. One should not practice such dual politics," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, the CM said, "I have already said that the notices will be withdrawn, where is the issue? In case the notices are issued they will be withdrawn and no one will be evicted, where is the issue?" "Whichever district it is...They (BJP) had also given notices in several districts. Why did they give? Why are they doing such politics? In case notices were served by our government, they will be withdrawn and no farmers will not be evicted....the protest they have planned on November 4 is for politics keeping in mind by-polls in three segments and Maharashtra elections," he added.

A section of farmers from Vijayapura district have alleged that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, and similar allegations have surfaced from a few other places.

The BJP is planning a statewide agitation on November 4, demanding the resignation of Minority Welfare and Waqf Minister B Z Zameer Ahamed Khan, and against the Congress government over the issue.

Accusing the BJP of only doing politics and and not speaking the truth, Siddaramaiah said, "they only speak lies, they make issue out of non issue. Is there any issue in MUDA (site allotment case, in which he is accused and facing probe)? They wanted to make a non issue, an issue." Channapatna, Shiggaon and Sandur Assembly segments will go for by-polls on November 13.

The CM said he will go for campaigning in three assembly segments that will go for bypolls, from November 4 to 11.

He expressed confidence about Congress winning all the three segments.
