Mangalore, September 12: Olympian M.R. Poovamma won the gold medal in the 400m race at the 51st National Open Athletics Championship in Kolkata on Sunday.
Machettira Raju Poovamma, who lives in Mangalore clocked 53.87 seconds and beat her rivals Delhi's Delhi's Alka Rani (55.53s) and ONGC's Anu Mariam Jose (55.70).
Although Poovamma was part of the team that represented India in the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, she did not get a chance to participate in the 400X4m relay.
She is presently training at the camp in Patiala to participate in the London 2012 Olympics. She is coached by District Sports' Schools athletics coach Vasanthakumar
