Bhat had swallowed the ring and studs in Bengaluru on August 7, Additional Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan N siad. He was arrested at Nitte in Karkala, Udupi district, a day later but didn't show any signs of ill health.

Around 11 pm, he complained of severe stomach pain. Police rushed him to hospital but he tried to avoid undergoing scan.

Investigation Officer S V Girish made him undergo the scan to locate the ornaments in the stomach and intestine. He was fed natural laxatives such as bananas and raw vegetables.

The ornaments may take some time to come out of the body through the bowels. Doctors are checking his stools (faeces).

As of now, Bhat is out of danger as the ring he had swallowed was a whole one. The ring or studs were not powdered. But doctors fear harm to his intestines from the sharp edges of the ear studs.

Bhaskar Shetty, a prominent businessman from Udupi, who owned a chain of supermarkets in Saudi Arabia, had gone missing on July 28 and was found murdered later.

Police have arrested his wife Rajeshwari B Shetty, son Navneeth Shetty and Bhat for the murder. They suspect Rajeshwari was having an affair with Bhat and misappropriating Shetty's money.

Shetty had also threatened to divorce Rajeshwari and disown her as well as Navneeth.

Mom-son in custody

Rajeshwari and son Navneeth Shetty were on Monday remanded in police custody for five days. Manipal police had sought nine days of custody when they were produced before Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) Rajesh Karnan of Udupi court.

Sources said that apart from Rajeshwari, Navneeth and astrologer Niranjan Bhat, some others could have been involved in the murder, said sources.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: Following several reported suicides allegedly caused by harassment from Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Friday acknowledged that the current laws are insufficient in dealing with the highhandedness of these institutions in the state.

Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Parameshwara confirmed widespread complaints of MFI-related harassment, stating that existing laws were ineffective in curbing the issue. The Congress government plans to amend the law to ensure stricter regulations for MFIs.

"The reports from our department indicate that current laws are inadequate, and they lack the necessary strength to curb this menace," Parameshwara said. He added that new, stringent laws would be framed to regulate the MFIs, with the Congress government taking steps in that direction. In the meantime, officials have been instructed to take immediate action regarding ongoing harassment cases.

Explaining the situation, Parameshwara highlighted that MFIs often demand multiple signatures from loan recipients, which they might not fully understand. "This leads to forced raids, seizures of properties, and other actions," he noted, adding that such practices need to be addressed under law.

Law Minister H.K. Patil and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have also taken note of the issue. Siddaramaiah has called for a meeting on January 25 to discuss the alarming rise in cases and the ineffectiveness of current laws.

The issue has sparked public outcry, with victims’ families, including the wife of a suicide victim, sending symbolic protests such as mangalsutras to Parameshwara, demanding action against the MFI staff involved. Numerous petitions have been filed in Deputy Commissioners' offices across the state, urging government intervention to stop MFI harassment.

In response, opposition leaders, including Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, BJP’s R. Ashoka, and Basavaraj Bommai, have accused the Congress government of losing control over MFIs, enabling the widespread exploitation of vulnerable citizens.

Udupi: A 59-year-old man has allegedly lost ₹20.17 lakh in a stock market scam after being lured by promises of high returns.

Vinod, the complainant, stated that he discovered an online stock market-related company, PML Securities, on November 2 last year. Encouraged by its offerings, he began investing through the company’s mobile applications, PML Max and PML PRO, starting from November 27.

Initially, his investments were returned in line with the IPO (Initial Public Offering) process, reinforcing his trust in the platform. However, trouble arose when he attempted to withdraw his funds, only to find himself unable to do so. Upon contacting the company, he was allegedly persuaded that additional payments were required to unlock his money.

Trusting the assurances given, Vinod continued making payments, transferring a total of ₹20.17 lakh to various bank accounts linked to the company until December 24. The complaint alleges that the operators of PML Max and PML PRO deceived him by falsely promising substantial returns on stock market investments.

A case has been registered at the Manipal Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
