Mangaluru, Dec 19: Police resorted to baton charge when a large number of people gathered in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner in the city today defying the prohibitory orders to register their protest against contentious Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens.
When the protesters began to raise slogans against communal laws passed by the union government, the police began lathi charge and took many agitators into custody.
Security was beefed across the city after the police clamped prohibitory under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) last night.
The baton charge led to a clash between the agitators and the policemen who dragged some of the protesters into their vans and took them away.
A tense atmosphere gripped the area. Most of the shops in Sate Bank area of the city were shut down.
