Udupi, Dec 14: A Hindutva leader and self-proclaimed ‘gau rakshak’ has been arrested by the police in connection with cow theft and illegal transportation cases in Udupi district.
The accused has been identified as Anil Prabhu (45), former Convener of Karkala unit of Bajrang Dal. He is a resident of Thellar, Karkala.
Even though he used to identify himself as a ‘gau rakshak’, he is suspected to be a part of a wider cattle theft network. According to police, he was reportedly offering refuge to cattle thieves.
Police picked up Prabhu based on the information revealed by Mohammed Yasin, who was arrested a few days ago on charge of beef transportation.
According to Yasin, he and many others used to pay protection money to Prabhu to cover up illegal cattle slaughtering and evade police investigation.
Prabhu is currently being questioned by the police over his links with cattle theft racket.
