PU students to get free laptops in Karnataka

Bangalore, Jan 23: The Karnataka government on Wednesday announced that it would provide free laptops and electronic notepads to pre-university (PU) students across the State.

The announcement was made by Governor H?R?Bhardwaj while addressing a joint session of the Legislature in Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday.

Karnataka seems to be following in the footsteps of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which have been distributing free laptops to PU students.

The UP government reportedly spent Rs 830 crore on purchasing 4.4 lakh laptops. The State Bharatiya Janata Party, in its Assembly election manifesto, had promised to distribute free laptops and tablets to PU and graduate students if it came to power. There are about 10.5 lakh I and II PUC students in the State.

Except a one-line announcement, the governor's speech did not offer much details about the government's plan. The announcement has, however, left the primary and secondary education department, headed by Minister of State Kimmane Ratnakar, in a state of panic. The department has to allocate huge funds for the purchases despite a weak budgetary allocation.

Perceived as a populist scheme, with Lok Sabha elections round the corner, the idea to distribute free laptops was not recommended by the education department. Secretariat sources said the department was more concerned about meeting basic infrastructure facilities in government schools and colleges.

Soon after Bhardwaj's announcement, education department officials held an emergency meeting to discuss possible avenues to make provision for funds to realise the executive decision. An officer even said the department was unable to understand the decision. The governor said, “My government has decided to provide laptops and electronic notepads to PUC?students.”

The department was not sure whether students of all streams would be given free gadgets. It is said even Ratnakar had no answer to many questions raised by the officials, as he was not kept in the loop by the chief minister.

Mysuru: K. Marigowda, Chairman of the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), resigned on Wednesday, citing health issues and directions from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Marigowda, once considered a close confidant of the Chief Minister, met with Siddaramaiah earlier in the day before submitting his resignation to the Principal Secretary for Urban Development in Bengaluru. While he was unavailable for direct comment, he informed the media that the CM had instructed him to step down. "My health is not good. I’ve suffered two strokes and am unable to carry out my duties effectively," Marigowda said.

His resignation follows an incident on September 27, when he was confronted by Congress party members at Mysuru Airport in Mandakalli during Siddaramaiah's visit. Supporters of the CM, who had gathered in large numbers, accused Marigowda of being responsible for the CM’s recent difficulties. Despite his attempts to explain, they demanded he leave the premises, forcing him to depart under pressure. Marigowda had previously served as president of the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat.

The resignation also comes amid ongoing investigations by the Lokayukta Police. A case was filed on September 27 against Siddaramaiah, his wife B.M. Parvathi, brother-in-law B.M. Mallikarjuna Swamy, and J. Devaraju, following a special court directive to investigate a complaint by Mysuru-based RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna.

The case involves a 3.16-acre plot of land in Kesare (Survey No. 464) in Mysuru taluk, which Mallikarjuna Swamy gifted to Parvathi. Parvathi had requested alternative land for this Kesare property, which was developed by MUDA without acquiring it. In return, she received 14 sites in the Third and Fourth Stages of Vijayanagar.

Following the court's order, the Lokayukta Police formed four special teams on September 28. An inspection of both the original Kesare land and the 14 alternative sites in Vijayanagar was conducted in the presence of the petitioner. Mallikarjuna Swamy and Devaraju were questioned on October 10.

Additionally, an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was filed on September 30 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Siddaramaiah and others, based on the Lokayukta FIR.

Subsequently, Parvathi requested MUDA to reclaim the 14 sites. The process began on October 1, when MUDA received a letter from Parvathi via her son, MLC Dr. Yathindra. The sites were officially returned by October 3. The Lokayukta Police investigation continues.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
