‘Inter-state’ instead of ‘inter-caste’: Brahmin NGOs ally to find UP brides for Karnataka boys

Mysuru, Nov 12: The shortage of “suitable brides” in the community is one of the biggest challenges faced the Brahmins in Karnataka. They fear that the inevitable inter-caste marriages may further reduce the population of ‘pure Brahmins’ in this south Indian state. This is not a fresh crisis. For decades, traditional Brahmin families in this region have been struggling to find the right match for eligible grooms, especially for puritans.

In order to address this shortage, two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have come up with an ‘inter-state’ solution. A delegation of Kendriya Brahmana Mahasabha from UP’s Varanasi has come to Karnataka to discuss the modalities with the local Brahmins. In fact, the initiative was launched by the Mysuru-based Vipra Paraspara Sahaya Samithi led by educationist H V Rajeev, who terms it ‘Ganga-Cauvery Sammilana.’

The Varanasi delegation led by its president Kamalaksha Upadhyaya received an overwhelming response as nearly 500 parents turned up for a brainstorming session organized in Mysuru on Saturday. Interacting with the parents, Upadhyaya stated that families in Varanasi are ready to enter into a matrimonial alliance with their counterparts in Mysuru.

"Brides from Varanasi are willing to wed men engaged in the traditional occupation in Mysuru. We want these marriages to be simple, devoid of dowry demands. Besides, both the NGOs will give a guarantee to the bride's family that their daughter will be looked after properly and that there will not be any matrimonial dispute," he said. Marriage proposals will be finalised only after the horoscope or kundali matching is done, he added.

Laying emphasis on the need for such an inter-state alliance to help the young Brahmins fulfill their ‘grihastashrama (householders' stage) responsibilities, Rajeev said that due to changed social circumstances many Brahmin men are ageing as bachelors. "In Maharashtra, the Brahmin population is 11%. In Uttar Pradesh, it’s 17%. But in Karnataka, it is a minuscule 2%," he said, explaining the rationale for looking northwards for numbers.

The local parents, who took part in the session enquired on how to send marriage proposals, how the young men and women could meet each other, marriage customs etc. They also discussed cultural differences, which may become an obstacle in the later stage of a marriage. It was decided that Anuraga Matrimony, which is operating in Bengaluru and Mysuru, will provide a platform for families from both the cities over finalising proposals.

Bengaluru, Nov 22: For the second day running, the Karnataka BJP on Friday staged a statewide protest condemning the government’s alleged move to notify land of farmers as Waqf property.

The BJP staged a protest before the offices of Deputy Commissioners at district headquarters.

The BJP leaders are vehemently demanding that the state government cancel a 1974 Gazette notification in this regard.

The agitators are also demanding scrapping of the Waqf Board and the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Waqf and Housing Zameer Ahmad Khan.

The BJP MLAs, MLCs, MPs gathered in the premises of Freedom Park and staged a protest under the leadership of Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and slammed the state government.

MLA T.S. Srivatsa led the protest in Mysuru and hundreds of party workers and farmers staged the protest under the leadership of former MP Pratap Simha in Kodagu.

Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh led the agitation in Mandya.

This was the first time that Sumalatha took part in the party’s programme after the Lok Sabha elections.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra claimed, “The Congress government in Karnataka is issuing notices to farmers claiming the ownership of their lands to the Waqf Board and pushing them on the streets overnight.”

In the first week of December, three teams formed by the BJP will travel across the state and record the grievances of farmers.

“The state government is attempting to snatch away the lands belonging to temples as well,” Vijayendra alleged and added that the teams would comprise all senior leaders of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the police have taken Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik into custody while staging a protest march to the office of Zameer Ahmad Khan in Bengaluru.

Muthalik along with Hindutva activists was planning to lay siege to Zameer’s office over the Waqf row.

The police stopped Muthalik and requested him to submit the memorandum by reaching the minister’s office in a vehicle. However, Muthalik refused to go with the police and continued his footmarch. The police took him into custody following arguments.

Bengaluru: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led union government has requested the Karnataka High Court to direct the Mandya district administration and the state government to clear a madrasa operating within the premises of the historic Jama Masjid in Srirangapatna.

The Waqf Board, opposing this move, has claimed the mosque as its property and defended the right to conduct madrasa activities there.

The matter was brought before a division bench headed by Chief Justice N V Anjaria following a public interest litigation filed by a person named Abhishek Gowda from Kabbalu village in Kanakapura taluk. The petition alleged “unauthorised madrasa activities” within the mosque.

Representing the Central government, Additional Solicitor General of India for High Court of Karnataka, K Arvind Kamath argued that the Jama Masjid was designated as a protected monument in 1951, yet unauthorised madrasa operations continue there.

He noted that concerns over potential law and order issues have so far prevented any intervention. Kamath urged the court to direct the Mandya district administration to take action and vacate the madrasa from the mosque.

In defence, lawyers for the state government and the Waqf Board contested this request, stating that the Waqf Board had been recognised as the owner of the property since 1963 and, thus, conducting madrasa activities there is lawful.

After hearing both sides, the bench adjourned the case for further arguments, scheduling the next hearing for November 20.

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.
