Mangaluru, May 28: City Crime Branch (CCB) officers and Moodbidri police have arrested 11 men and successfully cracked kidnapping and supari cases.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police N Shashi Kumar told media persons on Friday that one Rehman Sheikh from Mumbai had contacted Waqar Younus from Moodbidri and had directed him to hand over a parcel containing 440 grams of gold to one Hyder Ali from Bengaluru in the first week of May. One Mohammed Mahaz also received information that his friend Younus would be delivering 440 gms of gold to one Ali in Bengaluru.

Mahaz with help of accomplice Adil from Uppala abducted Younus at Pucchemogaru and forcefully took him to Uppala in Kasaragod. Mahaz, after snatching the gold, had released Younus. When there was no information on the parcel’s whereabouts, both Hyder Ali and Sheikh had contacted Younus, only to be informed about the kidnapping incident. Sheikh contacted a rowdy sheeter Pattodi Salam to mount pressure and collect gold from Younus.

Salam issued threats to Younus over phone and even visited his house. Unable to bear the pressure, Younus filed a complaint with Moodbidri police on May 21. In the complaint, Younus stated that Mahaz and others had taken away 440 grams of gold after kidnapping him.

Following the complaint, the Moodbidri police and CCB sleuths swung into act and arrested Mohammed Mahaz (20) and Mohammed Adil (25), members of the notorious Kalia Suhail gang of Uppala.

The police even recovered 300 grams of gold worth Rs 13,86,600 from a jewellery shop in Kanhangad in Kerala. Meanwhile, Sheikh had given a supari of Rs 5 lakh to Pattodi Salam to recover gold from Younus and Mahaz. Sheikh had even ordered Salam to murder the duo if they failed to recover gold from them.

Accordingly, Pattodi Salam, along with his brother Abdul Sheikh and four rowdy sheeters (all from Mumbai), Hyder Ali from Bengaluru and others drew a plan to kidnap Mahaz and Younus.

The men waiting near the house of Mahaz at Beluvau were arrested by the police. Two cars, five talwars and 10 mobile phones used in the crime were seized by the police.

The nine arrested are Abdul Salam alias Pattodi Salam (34), Mohammed Sharukh (26) from Jokatte, Sayyed Hyderali (29), Asif Ali (28) from Bengaluru, Abdulla Sheikh (22), Shabas Hussain (49), Mushahid Ansari (38), Sheikh Sajid Hussain (49) and Mushtaq Qureshi (42) from Maharashtra.

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday backed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over his claim that the BJP had offered Rs 50 crore each to 50 Congress MLAs in an attempt to "topple" the state government.

Addressing reporters here, Shivakumar, also the Congress state president, said, “The BJP indeed lured 50 Congress MLAs with Rs 50 crore each.”

He defended Siddaramaiah’s statement and said the Congress MLAs were briefed about the BJP’s alleged 'Operation Lotus', a term used to describe the BJP's attempts to destabilise ruling governments through horse-trading.

“Some of our MLAs informed the Chief Minister about this matter, and he, in turn, shared it with the media,” Shivakumar said.

At an event in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah reiterated the claim that "none of the Congress MLAs had accepted the offer".

He also accused the BJP of filing false cases against him in a bid to "remove him and overthrow his government".

The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations.
