Bengaluru, Nov 23: Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Saturday claimed that the Congress and JD(S) were facing an existential crisis and trying to come together against the BJP ahead of the December 5 bypolls in Karnataka.

Speaking to reporters here, he said Siddaramaiah and H D Kumaraswamy were taking a final leap towards destroying their parties, the Congress and JD (S). Expressing confidence about the BJP winning all the 15 assembly segments going to the bypolls, the former chief minister requested the election commission to declare K R Pete and Hoskote assembly constituencies as "sensitive."

"The bypoll campaign is in full swing and political developments are taking a new turn. The parties that are in fear of existential crisis, leaving aside morality and ideology are trying to come together to save themselves, Gowda said.

JD(S) Kumaraswamy and Deve Gowda were until recently saying the BJP was better than Congress... and Congress Siddaramaiah too has said there was no chance of his party joining hands with the JD(S) again, but their conduct in the last two-three days is reflecting otherwise," he said.

Gowda was referring to the Congress and JD(S) leaders claim that the main objective of both the parties was to defeat disqualified legislators, whom BJP has fielded as its candidates in 13 of 15 assembly seats going to the bypolls.

The former chief minister said, "on one side Siddaramaiah and on the other Kumaraswamy, both of them were successfully taking a final leap towards destroying their own parties, I wish them success." He claimed that the JD(S) orgainstion has collapsed and was limited to one family, while in the Congress where everyone had to work collectively, Siddaramaiah was left on his own as several senior party leaders were upset with his style of functioning as congress legislature party leader.

Among the 15 segments going to bypolls, 12 were held by the Congress and 3 by the JD(S), whose coalition government collapsed due to rebellion by the disqualified MLAs.

Gowda alleged that attempts were being made to create "confusion" in some places like K R Pete, Hoskote and also at constituencies in Belagavi. "I appeal to the election commission-there are plans by opposition parties to create trouble during the election process at several places and necessary action should be taken to hold it in a disciplined way.

I urge them (EC) to declare K R Pete and Hoskote as sensitive assembly constituencies and make special arrangements there, he said.

To a question about BJP taking the JD(S) support in case the party falls short of numbers or will there be more opposition MLAs joining the party, Gowda said such a situation may not arise at all and expressed confidence that his party will gain a majority on its own.

"If someone comes to the party accepting its ideology and principles, we will accept, he maintained. The ruling BJP needs to win at least six seats in the bypolls to remain in a majority in the 224-member assembly, which will still have two vacant seats-- Maski and R R Nagar.

Gowda pointed out that in Maharashtra, NCP legislators have come forward to join hands with the BJP for "good administration." "JD(S) patriarch Deve Gowda and Siddaramaiah should at least wake up now as there is general liking towards the BJP across the country and people are favouring the party's government for good administration and welfare of the country," the union minister said.

If the BJP had contested on its own in the Maharashtra election, it could have gained a two-third majority, but it went with Shiv Sena respecting the long association between the parties, he said. They (Sena) have dug their own grave... in 6 months to one year, Shiv Sena will be wiped out, Gowda added.

Udupi: A vigilant Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, Aparna K T, demonstrated remarkable presence of mind when she rescued a student who slipped while trying to board a moving train at Udupi Railway Station on Friday morning.

The incident occurred as passenger train number 06602 arrived at the station around 7:30 AM. The student, traveling from Mangaluru to Gokarna, had briefly alighted to purchase snacks. However, as the train began moving, she hurried back towards the carriage with the snacks in hand. In her rush, she lost her footing, slipping dangerously between the platform and the moving train.

Woman constable Aparna K T was given a cash reward of Rs 5000.

Constable Aparna, who had been closely monitoring the passengers, immediately sprang into action. “I saw her running towards the train and alerted everyone by blowing my whistle. She slipped, and her legs were caught between the platform and the train. Without hesitation, I pulled her out with the help of others nearby,” she recalled.

Thanks to Aparna’s quick thinking and the swift response of the railway staff, the train was stopped in time. Railway personnel, including the guard and loco pilot, were immediately informed, and they acted promptly to halt the train using both flag signals and a walkie-talkie.

RPF Inspector Madhusoodhanan PV arrived at the scene shortly after to check on the passenger's condition. The shaken but uninjured student was given water and helped back onto the train to safely continue her journey.

In an added measure of care, the RPF post at Bhatkal was notified to follow up on the passenger’s well-being during her journey. The student, fortunately, reached her destination without further incident.

The heroic rescue was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral on social media, earning widespread praise. In recognition of her bravery, Regional Railway Manager (RRM) Karwar awarded Constable Aparna a cash reward of ₹5,000, commending her quick action that averted a potentially tragic accident.

In a significant development, a special court tasked with handling cases against Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MP/MLAs) has ordered that a First Information Report (FIR) be filed regarding the Muda case.

Additionally, the Karnataka Lokayukta, which is an anti-corruption body, has been tasked with investigating allegations against Siddaramaiah, who is reportedly involved in the case.

The court instructed the Lokayukta (an anti-corruption authority) to provide a report within three months. It also ordered the relevant authorities to file a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the case.

Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat issued the directive, compelling the Mysuru Lokayukta police to commence an investigation following a formal complaint lodged by Snehamayi Krishna.

The Karnataka Lokayukta in Mysuru is required to carry out the investigation under Section 156 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which mandates the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

Mysuru: Chairman of JD(S) core committee and Chamundeshwari constituency MLA G T Devegowda on Thursday expressed his solidarity with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying the latter need not resign, while lambasting leaders of his own party and alliance partner BJP, including Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

In his speech during Mysuru Dasara inauguration he said that if persons against whom FIR is registered have to resign, many leaders from all the three parties, including Opposition Leader R Ashoka, will have to resign.

“All are sitting in glass houses... Since I know Siddaramaiah well, I am talking about him. At a time when mines and real estate are ruling politics, Siddaramaiah has survived in politics. He has never done any favour,” Devegowda said.

He added, “Allegations against Siddaramaiah are unexpected and accidental. If the Governor and Chief Justice order an investigation, it does not mean that he should resign."

He continued, asking, "Have they told Siddaramaiah to resign or have they asked to imprison him? When a person becomes a Central minister, he or she should realise their dignity and responsibility. Instead of recognising the good work done by Siddaramaiah, they ask him to resign. Will Kumarswamy (facing an FIR) resign? Should Siddaramaiah, who has become CM with a support of 135 MLAs, resign?"

"Opposition leaders are not remembering the good work of earlier CMs Kengal Hanumanthaiah, Veerendra Patil, Ramakrishna Hegde, H D Deve Gowda or S M Krishna. Karnataka is a model state. It is a bad trend to topple an elected government which is doing good work,” he further said.

Devegowda added, “Siddaramaiah is Goddess Chamundeshwari’s ‘Varaputra’ and hence has her blessings during tough times. He won the election in Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency, when the BJP-JD(S) government was in power in 2006. With the blessings of the Goddess, he has held varied positions right from becoming an MLA for the first time in 1983. He presented 15 budgets and has become CM for a second time. He took H C Mahadevappa, a Dalit leader to the state level. Siddaramaiah has the support of Deputy CM D K Shivakumar as ‘Jodeththu’. Blessings of the beneficiaries of guarantee schemes are with him (Siddaramaiah).”

Siddaramaiah said, “Devegowda was a MUDA member. He knows the truth. Hence, he is saying this. His words have filled strength in me. ‘Satyameva Jayate’, Truth will always triumph.”
