Bengaluru, Nov 24: Former union minister C K Jaffer Sharief was hospitalised after he collapsed while getting into the car for Friday prayers. He is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Fortis Hospital on Cunningham Road.
The 85-year-old Congress veteran’s pulse had dropped following a disturbance in his heart rhythm. He is now on a temporary pacemaker and his parameters are stabilising, hospital sources said.
According to family sources, the paramedical staff (who are with him round the clock) rushed him to the nearby Santosh Hospital.
“They could not record his pulse. He was administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and given first aid. Subsequently, he was shifted to Fortis,” a close associate of Mr. Sharief said.
Doctors had advised Mr. Sharief to get a pacemaker two years ago, when he had complained of uneasiness in the chest.
According to his associate, Mr. Sharief was too stressed out of late as he was busy preparing for the release of the Urdu translation of Moulana Abul Kalam Azad’s ‘India Wins Freedom’.
“He had invited former President Pranab Mukherjee for the book release that was scheduled to be held at Palace Grounds on November 28,” he said.
