Kangra, Nov 2: The Congress, by promising “zero tolerance” of corruption when its own Chief Minister in Himachal Pradesh was facing allegations of graft, had become a “laughing club,“ Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.
It was time to rid the “Devbhoomi”, [land of the Gods], of monsters, he said at an election rally in Kangra.
Chief Minister Virabhadra Singh, Mr. Modi pointed out, was “out on bail” on graft charges. He asked the crowd whether it could digest the fact that such a Chief Minister had released the Congress manifesto promising to combat corruption.
“I feel the Congress has become a laughing club. The Chief Minister is himself out on bail... And he is out on bail on what charges? That of corruption. He is facing serious allegations,” Mr. Modi said.
Despite the charges Congress leaders came out before the media to release their manifesto, which says the Congress government would show zero tolerance of corruption.
“Can you digest it?” he asked. Even a small child from Himachal would not fall for it, he said.
People across the country were engaged in ''Swachhta Abhiyan'' (cleanliness campaign) and were “wiping out” the old party whenever they got the opportunity through elections.
“It is time to save Himachal Pradesh from those who looted it...from danavas [monsters],” he added.
Polls on November 9
Himachal Pradesh goes to the polls on November 9.
On Tuesday, BJP president Amit Shah named former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal as the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the coming Assembly polls.
Union Minister J.P. Nadda was seen as one of the contenders but Mr. Dhumal’s mass connect in the hill State seems to have tipped the scale in his favour.
