Congress MLAs 'unhappy' over conduct of ministers

Bangalore, Jan 24: The ruling party legislators are learnt to have again complained to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah against some of his ministerial colleagues for their “lax attitude” in responding to people's problems.

At the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting on Thursday, several MLAs took serious exception to the way ministers have been functioning.

The legislators are said to be unhappy with ministers for PWD, Revenue, Excise and Minorities Development.

The legislators reportedly alleged that the ministers even do not receive their (MLAs') phone calls while the officers heading the department say they cannot take any decision without the consent of the minister.

Many district in-charge ministers hardly visit their respective districts and whenever they come, they do not interact with the legislators, the MLAs are learnt to have complained. The legislators' complaining against the ministers has become common in all legislature party meetings.

Though the chief minister has been assuring of taking steps, nothing has been done. And on Thursday, Siddaramaiah did not even give the customary assurance, much to the chagrin of legislators.

Thin attendance

With several legislators reportedly disappointed about the outcome of CLP meetings in the past, hardly about 50 legislators are said to have attended Thursday's meeting chaired by Siddaramaiah.

“None of the ministers is following the directions issued by the chief minister. Hence, there is no point in attending the meeting,” a senior MLA said on condition of anonymity. This apart, the legislators made Siddaramaiah wait for them for nearly half an hour at the meeting.

The chief minister arrived at the meeting convened at Conference Hall of Vidhana Soudha at 9.15 am. But not many legislators had come. As a result, he waited till 9.45 am to start the meeting.

DK-Udupi local authorities' constituency by-poll: 4 candidates – Cong, BJP, SDPI, Ind – in fray

Mangaluru: The by-election to the legislative council from the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi local authorities' constituency will be a contest among four candidates. An independent candidate, Muhammed Riyaz, has withdrawn his nomination on Monday, the last day for withdrawal.

Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP stated that candidates Kishore BR (BJP), Raju Poojary (Congress), Anwar Sadat S (SDPI), and Dinakar Ullal (independent) will be in the fray.

Polling will be held at 392 booths in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts between 8am and 4pm on Oct 21.

A total of 6,032 voters from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are eligible to vote. While there will be 234 polling booths in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi will have 158 stations. Gram panchayat members, corporators of the Mangaluru City Corporation, members of city municipal councils, town municipal councils, town panchayats, MLAs, MLCs, and Lok Sabha members are eligible to vote.

Election observer of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Pankaj Kumar Pandey, reviewed the poll preparations at the deputy commissioner's office on Monday. He issued directions to officials regarding arrangements to be made during the election and counting of votes.

The deputy commissioner stated that out of 6,032 voters, 3,127 are women and 2,905 are men. He said the counting of votes will be held at St Aloysius PU College in the city on Oct 24.

Udupi deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari K, city police commissioner Anupam Agrawal, Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO Anandh K, Dakshina Kannada SP Yathish N, Udupi SP Arun K, and additional deputy commissioners Santhosh Kumar G and Mamatha Devi were present.
