Vellore, Aug 30: A 40-year-old head constable attached to the highway patrol of Vellore district police was fatally knocked down by a truck near Vaniyambadi when he was engaged in vehicle check on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway in the early hours of Monday.
After checking the documents, Mohan was walking back to the police vehicle parked on the service lane.
In the meantime, a speeding truck transporting cement bags to Bangalore hit the rear of the trailer truck. In the impact, the trailer truck moved forward and mowed down the head constable.
"When vehicle hit him, Mohan Raj lost balance and fell down and the left front wheel ran over him," police said.
Special sub-inspector Ganga Pandian and constable Sankar Guru, who were waiting in the petrol vehicle, rushed him to Government Hospital in Vaniyambadi. However, the doctors declared him brought dead.
Police arrested D Naveen Kumar, driver of the cement-laden truck and launched an inquiry.
Raj Mohan, a 1999 batch constable, was a native of Vellore. He is survived by his wife Kavitha , 36, and two sons - Jaggan Kumar , 14, and Praveen Kumar,12.
