Mangalore, Jan 3: A team of Mangalore city police led by Mangalore South ACP Pavan Nejjoor has arrested three chain-snatchers on Dec 28 near Pumpwell, and have detected as many as 23 cases of chain-snatching in different parts of the district.
The three arrested are Syed Sahil (22), son of Syed Muqbal from Uppala in Kasaragod district, Kerala, Mohammed Rafeeq (25) son of M M Ismail from B C Road, and Sadhat Ali (20) son of Aboobaker Siddiq from Pudu village near Farangipete in Bantwal taluk.
The police team recovered 17 gold chains weighing 450 grams, valuing approximately Rs 15 lakhs. The police have also seized a two-wheeler which was used in chain-snatching attempts by the trio.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Mangalore city police commissioner R Hithendra said that all the three arrested had a number of chain-snatching cases against them and served jail prior to this arrest.
He said that out of the 23 cases, 11 had been committed in the city commissionerate limits while others had been attempted in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Shimoga districts.
According to the police, Syed Sahil and Sadhat were also accused in a robbery case in Shimoga district. Accused Sadhat had also been arrested before on charges of drug-peddling (Ganja), burglary and two-wheeler theft in separate instances under Mangalore city limits.
Two other accused Tauseef and Riyaz are said to be absconding.
A senior police inspector said that the three arrested had become friends while in jail and operated as a gang together once they were out.
Along with Pavan Nejjoor, the investigating team comprised of Pandeshwar circle inspector Dinakar Shetty and constables Damodar, Shaju, Keshav, Vishwanath, Prakash and others.
