Kasargod, March 8: Two women, part of a five-member gang indulged in luring men and later blackmailing them by looting valuables, were arrested from Chattamchal in the district on Tuesday.
The police identified the accused as B K Jaseela and Zeenath Banu. They were remanded to judicial custody under Section 395 of the IPC.
The police had launched a manhunt to nab three male members of the gang with whose assistance the women used to lure men and later blackmail them by pocking valuables and cash, the police said.
Tuesday's arrest was made when the duo lured a Neeleswaram-based merchant and his friend to come down to Kasaragod on March 1 by establishing “friendship” with him over mobile.
As the youths, in their mid 30s, reached the new bus station premises in Kasaragod in a car, the women joined them and had spent some time in the car. They then asked the youths to stop the car at a nearby house.
When the youths got down from the vehicle, three persons rushed and began to “harass” them for moving with women, before pocketing a mobile phone and cash from them. Later, they demanded Rs.50,000 from the youths.
The gang members also managed to pocket an ATM card and forced them to withdraw Rs.5,000 from a nearby counter.
The trio, later, escaped in the car along with the women. The car was found abandoned in a nearby locality. The incident came to light when the youths lodged a complaint with the police.
The arrest was made possible with the help of cyber cell, the police said.
