April 8, 2012

Mumbai, April 8: One person was killed and 18 were injured, three of them critically, when a motorist apparently lost control of his car and drove into a group of people gathered for a function at Samta Nagar in Kandivli (E) on Saturday. Eyewitnesses told cops a local politician was at the wheel but this could not be confirmed till late in the night.

The motorist fled the scene, leaving his Tata Indica, which has been seized by cops who are trying to establish his identity.

The incident occurred around 9.30pm. "It looks like the motorist lost control of his car and ploughed into the crowd. The victims were taken to Sancheiti Hospital," said additional commissioner Ramrao Pawar. The deceased has been identified as Malicarjun Unachi (48). "Unachi died on the spot," said a hospital official.

Confirming that there were rumours about the motorist being a politician, Pawar said it would take time to identify the accused. "We are checking his registration details," he said. He has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash driving. The victims include a 16-year-old boy who sustained severe head injuries.
