New Delhi, May 27: A 30-year-old pregnant woman was mowed down by a car on the Baba Ganganath Marg at Vasant Vihar, close to the Jawaharlal Nehru University-Priya complex crossing, on Saturday. The incident took place around 9am when the deceased was waiting with her husband, an auto driver, to go for her checkup.
The deceased, Chandni (30), was a resident of Munirka. This is the third instance when a pregnant woman has died in an accident this year.
A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Vasant Vihar Police Station. According to police, the incident was not really a result of reckless driving. The car has been impounded and no one has been arrested so far.
"An i-10 was heading towards Munirka when a boy appeared in front of the car trying to cross the road. This is the same area where work on widening of the road was taking place. The car tried to swerve, avoiding collision with the boy, and entered the opposite carriageway (narrowed for the ongoing work) and rammed into the deceased. She was taken to AIIMS but there she was declared brought dead,'' said a senior police officer.
The accused fled the spot after abandoning the car, police said. "We have got the necessary details of the car owner and he will be nabbed soon,'' said an officer.
