Koppal, November 30: Brothers of the alleged rape victim, Rashmi (name changed), who committed suicide at Hyathi village in Koppal taluk, have asserted that their sister was not subjected to gang rape.

Speaking with mediapersons here on Thursday, Manjunath Doli and Maruthi Doli clarified that their sister was not gang-raped, as reported. And her decision to end life was not due to the alleged incident. The matter was far from truth, they said.

They said Rashmi had been ailing from stomach pain for the last several years and she was undergoing treatment. Though she visited the local doctors, her could not be treated. “Since we are not financially well-off, we could not provide her additional treatment. On Monday (November 26), when we went to the fields to work, we had asked Rashmi to bring the lunch for us. When she did not return by evening, we went back to the house, only to see her having ended her life by consuming pesticides. She died inspite of the treatment,” they explained.

They further saidwhen the rape had not take place, there was no point in penalising the accused to pay Rs 30,000 as fine and asserted that they were not hiding the truth.

Neither were they under any pressure to avoid a probe into the matter, nor were they threatened not to report the matter to the police.
