The cell has registered a case on the basis of an email complaint it received on Tuesday from a person who claimed to be an acquaintance of the girl shown in the photograph. Cell deputy superintendent R Vinayakumaran Nair said an action could be taken only after getting a response from Facebook.
He said the complaint was sent from the email id of a person who introduced himself as Rajesh from Kuwait. He claimed that he knew the girl shown on the photograph as she was a relative of one of his friends. "The complainant contacted us again on Wednesday over phone and we have asked him to tell the girl to forward a complaint herself to the nearest police station so that the complaint holds strength," the DSP said.
It was following the death of Nirbhaya that someone posted the girl's photograph on Facebook depicting her as the 23-year-old victim. The post was uploaded on the pretext of paying tribute but it turned out to be malicious in nature as thousands shared the post.
