Dehradun, Sept 19: A Class 10 girl was allegedly gang-raped by fellow students at a boarding school at Sahaspur in Dehradun district, the police said.

Nine people — four students accused of committing the crime and five members of the school staff including its director Lata Gupta, principal Jitendra Sharma and administrative officer Deepak Malhotra — have been arrested, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Ashok Kumar said.

The matter came to light on Monday, more than a month after the incident took place on August 14, Mr. Kumar said. The survivor first confided in her elder sister, also a student of the school, when she realised that she might be pregnant. The sister informed the school authorities about the incident but instead of reporting it to the police, they tried to hush it up, Mr. Kumar said, and tried to abort the pregnancy. The authorities also threatened to dismiss the siblings if they disclosed the incident to anyone.

However, the victim’s elder sister spoke to a relative who informed the police.

The arrested students are aged between 16 and 18 years. According to the police, on August 14, the girl was taken to the backyard of the hostel by a classmate on the pretext that a teacher was calling her. When she reached there she found another classmate and two seniors waiting for her. They forcibly took her behind the bushes and allegedly raped her, the police said.
