Mangalore, Feb 17: The much-needed Missing Child Bureau (MCB), Karnataka was formally launched in Dakshina Kannada, which will be part of a vast network that will help in tracking down missing children in the country.

The Dakshina Kannada district cell of MCB was inaugurated at Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday.

The bureau will be run by a local NGO called Karnataka Integrated Development Society (KIDS), Puttur, which will co-ordinate with the local police to monitor unaccompanied children and track missing ones in the district.

Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota (BOSCO) has been appointed as the state nodal agency of the Missing Child Bureau of Karnataka, and one of its major goals is to establish district cells of MCB in each district in the state.

In turn, the nodal agency BOSCO appointed Puttur-based organisation KIDS as the MCB district cell for Dakshina Kannada.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Binu Varghese, state co-ordinator of MCB, said that the bureau was a web-based application exclusively to help trace missing children by lodging a complaint on the website. Concerned citizens can also provide information on unaccompanied and missing children found on streets, as well as children in difficult situations, he said.

Speaking after inaugurating the bureau, president of Juvenile Justice Board Patil Nagalingana Gowda said that the current situation showed children committing crimes increasingly. “When children go missing, they may have landed on the streets for having committed crimes, or for no fault of theirs. Children are our wealth; they are the future of this country. Try and have a humane approach while responding any complaint of a missing child – so as to not making the helpline mechanical,” he told the administrators of the bureau.

Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Asha Nayak said that the establishment of a missing child bureau was a long-awaited dream coming true.

There may be several reasons that children run away from homes including poverty. Some cases of missing children show how they are drawn towards television reality shows and run away. With changing modus operandi of children going missing, the real concern is where they are going. These children being used for begging, hawking, sexual exploitation and pornography, will lead to the destruction of the country, she said.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner A B said that the mechanism set in place by the MCB should provide consolation and support to the children rescued by them. The system should work towards upliftment of the society, he said.

Bishop of Puttur Diocese Dr Geevarghese Mar Divannasios, executive director of the MCB district cell Fr John Kunnatheth, deputy director of women and child welfare department Gertrude Veigas, Shubhajit Podar and others participated in the programme.

Mangaluru: The Ullal police have arrested Manohar, the owner of Vazco Beach Resort, and its manager Bharath in connection with the drowning of three college girls from Mysuru at the resort’s swimming pool on November 17.

City Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal confirmed the arrests, stating that a case has been registered under Section 106 of BNS. The bodies of the victims, all in their twenties, have been handed over to their parents. The women had arrived at the resort for a weekend getaway on November 16.

Following the tragic incident, the resort was sealed by officials led by Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan. The trade license of the resort, issued on June 13, 2024, has been suspended, and the tourism department has temporarily revoked the resort's registration. These actions prohibit the resort from engaging in any tourism-related activities until further notice.

Someshwara TMC Chief Officer stated that the suspension was due to the resort's failure to implement adequate safety measures, which resulted in the loss of three lives. Further investigations are underway.

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.
