Mangalore, Jul 24: The proposal of changing the name of several districts in the state including Dakshina Kannada kept forward on the occasion of golden jubilee of the creation of Karnataka state (Suvarna Karnataka celebrations), is still under progress', according to state revenue minister V Srinivas Prasad.
In a written reply to Congress MLC Ivan D'Souza in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, Mr Prasad said that the change of names of districts including Bangalore, Bellary, Bijapur, Belgaum, Hubli, Chikmagalur, Gulbarga, Mysore and Tumkur, was still under progress.
The change of names of cities such as Bangalore to Bengaluru, Mysore to Mysuru, Mangalore to Mangaluru, Shimoga to Shivamogga and Belgaum to Belgavi was also under progress, said the reply.
It also said that the change of names of Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada as proposed by scholar M Chidanandamurthy, was 'under consideration'.
The reply indicates that although the announcement of renaming of certain districts and cities that was made on Kannada Rajyotsava day in 2005 was to be made official the next year, the official process is still dragging on.
However, the written reply does not elaborate on the current status of the process or its hurdles in its completion.
Initially, it was Jnanpith awardee U R Ananthamurthy who had proposed the change of names from the anglicised version to the proposed ones.
