Ranchi, Oct 17: An 11-year-old girl in BJP-ruled Jharkhand’s Simdega district has died of starvation last fortnight, after her family was struck off the government welfare rolls for not linking their ration card with Aadhaar.

Santoshi Kumari died on September 28 after starving for four days, her mother Koili Devi told activists. The family had not received any ration since February but subsisted on doles from villagers and the mid-day meal Santoshi would get at her school.

In an exclusive report, Scroll.in, a news portal found out that in Simdega's Karimati village, the local dealer had been refusing to give ration to the Kumari's family, saying that their ration card wasn't linked to Aadhaar and hence was no longer valid. The family does not have Aadhaar cards.

Non-profit organisations Right to Food Campaign and NREGA Watch discovered that the PDS outlet had taken off the name of Koyli Devi, the child's mother, along with those of 10 other families as their cards were not linked. Activists confirmed with Jaldega block office that Koyli Devi's card had indeed been cancelled. The activists placed a request for a new card explaining the circumstances, but the card arrived two weeks after Santoshi's death.

In February this year, the Centre made it mandatory to have Aadhaar numbers to access subsidised ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS). The victim's mother said that since school was shut for Durga Puja holidays, Satoshi didn't have access to the mid-day meals she usually had. The girl's father is not sound of mind and her mother and sister makes no more than Rs 80-90 a day cutting grass for others, reports Scroll.

Government officials, however, have argued that Santoshi died of malaria, not starvation.

Not just subsidised ration, the February 28 notification from the government also made it mandatory for children to have Aadhaar cards for access to mid-day meals in government schools.

In August this year, Hindustan Times reported that only 42% children in the state have enrolled for Aadhaar. It also said that according to a notification from the Union ministry to Rajasthan government, the deadline for enrolling into Aadhaar was 31 August, 2017.

The news paper reported that 37 lakh students in 49,000 government schools in the state ran the risk of being denied mid-day meals if they did not get enrolled under the Aadhaar scheme within the stipulated deadline.

Mangaluru: A tragic accident took place on Saturday at Chembugudde near Thokkottu, claiming the life of a 47-year-old woman after a tanker lorry ran over her. The victim, identified as Rahmat H Rashid, was riding pillion with her husband, Abdul Rashid G, on their scooter.

The couple was traveling from Yenepoya Hospital to Bajpe when the scooter skidded on the poorly maintained road. Rahmat fell onto the road and was fatally struck by a tanker lorry that was coming from behind. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

The incident prompted a swift response from the DYFI Ullal Taluk Committee, which staged a protest on Saturday night, condemning the unsafe condition of the road. Nithin Kuthar, president of the committee, criticized MLA and Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader for failing to ensure safe infrastructure, despite touting the road as toll-free.

Kuthar demanded immediate repairs, warning that the committee would march to the MLA’s office with black flags if the road is not fixed within a week.

Former DYFI State President Sunil Kumar Bajal also voiced frustration over the deteriorating condition of Thokkottu market, highlighting the struggles people face while crossing roads riddled with dangerous potholes. In response to public outcry, temporary repairs were made to the road at Chembugudde on Sunday, though locals remain wary and demand a more permanent solution.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has killed or captured 69 terrorists linked to the Israeli spy agency Mossad during a major counterterrorism drill in the country's southeast, its spokesman says.

General Ahmad Shafaei, the spokesman for the “Martyrs of Security” drill, said Friday that a total of 23 terrorists have been killed and another 46 arrested in various clean-up operations ever since the IRGC Ground Force launched it in the Sistan and Baluchestan province on November 1.

Seven terrorists have also turned themselves in during the period.

“The undeniable fact about terrorists is that they rely on arrogant powers, particularly the intelligence service of the wicked and vicious Zionist regime," Shafaei said.

“Unfortunately, weapons and munitions at terrorists’ disposal are among the most sophisticated ones in the world. This accounts for their heavy dependence.”

The official stated that several members of the disbanded terror teams were non-Iranian nationals, who had been hired by foreign intelligence agencies to carry out acts of sabotage and terror inside Iran.

In a most recent operation, six terrorists were arrested and four others were eliminated, three of whom were non-Iranians, he added.

On October 26, ten members of Iran's law enforcement forces were killed in a terrorist attack in the Gohar Kuh district of Taftan in the Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The so-called Jaish al-Adl terrorist group claimed responsibility for the assault, which was one of the deadliest in the province in recent months.

The group has carried out numerous terrorist attacks in Iran, primarily in Sistan and Baluchestan.

Its tactics include the abduction of border guards as well as targeting civilians and police stations within the province to incite chaos and disorder.

In January, Iran launched a military operation during which the headquarters of the Pakistan-based terrorist group was targeted in missile strikes, destroying its infrastructure.

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.
