Mangaluru, Oct 13: Milagres College, Mangaluru in collaboration with Center for Health and Development [ CHD-India] and District Disaster Management Authority, Government of Karnataka observed a Regional Symposium on Global Climate Change and Human Health to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on 13th October, 2016. Dr. Edmond Fernandes, Member – Health Task Force, District Disaster Management Authority, Government of Karnataka gave the opening remarks on how climate change and health gets interlinked. He said that 2015 was the hottest year in human history since the time weather records have been noted. Addressing the august gathering, Dr. Edmond pointed out how by 2030, over 1,50,000 people will die only because of climate change in the form of heat waves, droughts and natural disasters. He stressed upon the need for Climate action.
Dr. Saba Mansoor, Director – Programmes, Center for Health and Development [ CHD-India] delivered a special lecture session on the know-hows of climate change and the need for addressing Sustainable Development Goal 13. She spoke about how Malaria, Dengue, Cholera, Malnutrition could increase in the next couple of decades because of changing weather conditions.
Rev. Fr. Valerian D’souza, Correspondent, Milagres Group of Institutions delivered the presidential address for the day. Rev. Fr. Michael Santhumayor, Principal, Milagres College, Mr. Anil Bhandary, Director – Partnerships, Center for Health and Development were others present on the dias. Karnataka Bank Ltd was the social responsibility partner marking the International Day for DRR.
