Addressing media persons at a news conference at the district information office in Mangalore on Sunday, Mr. Gupta said the MEM (Mobile Election Managing) service had been introduced, wherein smartphones are being utilized for effective monitoring.
“We have already distributed 35 smartphones among sector magistrates and returning officers. Wherever they find a poll code violation, they can take pictures, shoot videos and upload the content they collected as evidence or video stream it on our website”, Mr. Gupta said.
The MEM service will also be handy in polling station inspection, expenditure monitoring, polling day reporting etc. GPS technology has been incorporated in the service so that location of polling centres could be tracked by any official concerned and for greater precision in work, the Deputy Commissioner informed.
Speaking about the public grievance centre at his office, Mr. Gupta said that the helpline 1077 is already in use and public grievances on poll related issues are being dealt with on a call-centre model. PGR (public grievance) software has been incorporated and the technology although introduced with elections in mind, will be used to address public grievances post-elections as well, the Deputy Commissioner said.
Dr. Harish Kumar, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) was also present.
